Once, the gentle giants—called Hiu Paus in Indonesian—came to the bay of Botubarani because the remains from the local fish factory were discharged into the sea.

Attracted by the abundant food supply, they learned that they could always find enough to eat in the bay. Over the years, more and more whale sharks gathered along this stretch of coast and in this particular bay. It is therefore important to understand that the whale sharks initially came here on their own.
The local population took this opportunity to establish a small tourist infrastructure for swimming and snorkeling with the whale sharks.
