Sustainable Island Tourism in Indonesia

Saronde Island Resort is a remote resort in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, located in one of the country’s most biodiverse marine regions.
Sustainability, marine conservation and responsible tourism are at the core of our daily operations.
This annual review highlights our progress in waste management, marine protected area (MPA) conservation, and sustainable diving practices around Saronde Island.
Waste Management on a Remote Island in Indonesia
Effective waste management is one of the biggest challenges for island resorts in Indonesia. On Saronde Island, every piece of waste has a visible impact on the environment.
We successfully implemented and managed our Beach Clean Project , together with our local communities we collected and cleaned more then 6000 big rice sacks full of plastic which we sent to the recycling company in Manado , more the 20 tons of recyclable plastic waste.

In 2025, we continued to strengthen our island waste-management program by focusing on:
- Reducing single-use plastic in resort operations – every guest get a gratis refill drinking bottle on arrival at the airport for use during the stay with us and even longer
- Implementing consistent waste separation
- Reusing and recycling materials wherever possible
- Training our local Indonesian team in sustainable resource management
Our approach is based on long-term improvement rather than quick fixes, ensuring that tourism on Saronde Island remains environmentally responsible.
Marine Protected Area (MPA) in North Sulawesi
The Marine Protected Area around Saronde Island is the foundation of our ocean conservation efforts. We just signed a MOU with the NAVY for protect our Island ARCHIPEL from illegal fishing. The Marine Police installed a Station at Saronde and the Speedboat allows constant Patrols and Fisher boat checks.

Other Conservation priorities include:
- Protection of coral reefs and reef-building organisms
- Preservation of healthy fish populations
- Prevention of anchor damage and reef contact
- Promotion of responsible and sustainable scuba diving
Sustainable Diving & Responsible Tourism in Indonesia
Saronde Island Resort promotes sustainable scuba diving in Indonesia.
All diving activities follow environmentally responsible guidelines, ensuring minimal impact on the reef.
Sustainability at Saronde Island also means:
- Educating guests about marine conservation and marine macro life
- Actively involving staff in environmental protection
- Plastic collection during dives – we provide a free of charge bag to help to collect plastic waste also during diving
Responsible tourism helps protect Indonesia’s marine ecosystems while creating meaningful experiences for our guests
